Unbeaten Canford Cliffs filly lands Ruffian Stakes

Ridgemont’s five-time G1 winning stallion Canford Cliffs looks to have come up with a very smart two-year-old in the form of Almond Sea.

The latter made it three wins from three starts when romping home to a facile win in the Listed Wilgerbosdrift Ruffian Stakes (1000m) at Turffontein on Saturday.

Trained by Tony Peter, Almond Sea had won her only two previous starts by an aggregate of ten and a half lengths and she was sent off a hot favourite for the 2024 Ruffian Stakes.

Quickly away, under Calvin Habib, the filly pulled clear in the closing stages to win emphatically by eight and a quarter lengths and Almond Sea now looks destined for bigger things.

Bred by Peter De Beyer, Almond Sea is out of the Dupot mare Sylvie.

The filly was a R200 000 buy from the 2023 Cape Premier Yearling Sale Powered By Tattersalls.

Almond Sea is the 25th stakes winner for Canford Cliffs, whose G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes winning son Cliff Hanger ran third in the recent G3 Betway National Currency Sprint.

The former Irish 2000 Guineas winner is also the sire of Single File, who romped home to a convincing win at Fairview on Friday.
