Leading Cape farm Highlands Stud part of Ridgemont will be looking to continue the great run of success they have enjoyed at the KZN Yearling Sale, when they offer six high quality lots at the 2018 KZN Sale this week.

Highlands sold the 2017 KZN Sale topper, when their Twice Over colt out of Gin Rummy made R800 000, and had previously sold the sales topper in both 2016 and 2015.

Top class Eyes Wide Open

Highlands also consigned the brilliant Eyes Wide Open, subsequent winner of the Gr1 Investec Cape Derby and Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes, to the 2016 KZN Sale, where that Dynasty colt made R850 000.

They once again bring a top class draft to this year’s sale, with the Highlands contingent including yearlings by Flower Alley, Jackson and Pathfork.

Highlands’ Gr1 winning resident sire Potala Palace has a colt by the name of Tibetan Silk (Lot 30) in the draft. Bred on the same cross as promising Potala Palace winner Basilius, he is from the same family as G1 winners Coral Fever, Vega and Villandry.

Irish Champion Pathfork, whose runners include unbeaten Gr1 winner Mighty High, has two here –a colt called Look To The Sky (Lot 42), who hails from the family of 2018 Vodacom Durban July hope Coral Fever, and Barnane (Lot 280). Bred on the same cross as Pathfork’s high class stakes winner Madame Speaker, Barnane is a half-sister to five winners including Victress Stakes runner up Jabulani Jive and her dam was second in the SA Fillies Nursery.

Triple Gr1 winner, and among the leading first crop sires this season, Jackson also has a pair of lots in this draft. They include a colt (Lot 79) whose winning Western Winter dam is out of unbeaten champion Private Reserve, and a filly (Lot 110), who is a ¾ sister to Gr3 Racing Association Handicap winner Shimmering Gem.

Travers Stakes winner Flower Alley, the only sire to throw a Kentucky Derby winner standing in South Africa, is the sire of Juniper Lane (Lot 177). This colt, out of a winning Tapit mare, is a half-brother to last year’s KZN Sales topper and hails from the same family as none other than Epsom Derby winner and outstanding sire and sire of sires Roberto
