Ridgemont Highlands’ red hot resident stallion Rafeef looks to have yet another potentially smart sort to his hands in the form of Bonnaroo.
The latter, trained, like her sire and dam, by Mike de Kock, broke her maiden at the third time of asking when putting up a smart effort at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon.
Under Cape based jockey Richard Fourie, Bonnaroo, who was racing down the straight for the first time, was sent off a well backed favourite for Saturday’s Nightingale Maiden Plate (F&M) over 1160 metres.
When Fourie asked his mount the question, Bonnaroo quickly put the race to bed and bounded clear to win by two lengths.
It was a fine effort by the daughter of Rafeef, with Bonnaroo having her first start on Saturday since September.
Three-year-old Bonnaroo, bred and owned by Lady O’Reilly, is bred to be above average.
Not only is the filly a daughter of South Africa’s latest sire sensation, but she is out of a top-class racemare in the form of Festival Of Fire. The latter, a daughter of Kahal and from the immediate family of legendary South African racehorse and sire Jet Master, won six times including both the G2 KRA Fillies Guineas and G3 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge.
Bonnaroo continues the great run of late enjoyed by her sire Rafeef, who is South Africa’s Leading Second Season Sire of 2021-2022.
