The astute Mike Sharkey of Ridgemont Highlands and six of the stud’s best yearlings have settled in at the Cape Town International Convention Centre ahead of Wednesday’s 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Ridgemont Highlands have three yearlings by Dynasty, one by Captain Al, a Soft Falling Rain and a Futura at the auction and Sharkey gave his impressions.
“Of The Dynasty colts my favourite is probably Lot 22, Cragsman, who is out a half-sister to Cloth Of Cloud, Silver Mountain, Helderberg Blue and Wondrous Climber, Sean Tarry’s stayer who is getting better and won his fourth in a row last week. This one will take a bit of time, like the Dynastys do, he’s very nice and is likely to improve as he matures.
“Lot 34 is by Dynasty from Cup Of Rubies. He’s a very neat horse called Crimson King, from the family of Durban July winner Hunting Tower, also likely to stay.
“There is top sprinting blood in our third Dynasty. He is Lot 67, Steeplechase, from the family of Franny and the exported Sweet Sanette. He’s nice, he looks like a sprinter.”
Ridgemont Highlands’ last Captain Al will pass through the ring in the second hour of the Sale as Lot 49, named Chestnut Bay. “He’s a beautiful specimen from a Galileo mare, in my opinion one of the best horses on the sale,” said Sharkey.
Lot 77 is Passing Storm, a son of Soft Falling Rain and Honour Roll, by High Chaparral. “He’s tall, racy and good-looking with lots of scope,” Sharkey noted.
Futura’s son Warrior (Lot 123) has an Australian female line and Sharkey told: “Lynton Ryan, the man with the good eye, has this one on his shortlist. He’s a very nice colt, comes from a family of good Australian sprinters but looks to me like he’ll go a mile.”
