Ridgemont Highlands’ G1 winning stallion Potala Palace gained a notable update to his pedigree, when his relative Berkshire Shadow captured the G2 Coventry Stakes (1200m) on the first day of the 2021 Royal Ascot meeting.
An impressive winner of his only previous outing, the Andrew Balding trained Berkshire Shadow (by Dark Angel) provided champion jockey Oisin Murphy with his first Royal Ascot success of the week when thundering home to win Tuesday’s race.
A furlong out it seemed as though eventual third Vintage Clarets (16/1) was about to strike for another Sporting Life columnist Richard Fahey but the winner was beginning his winning run by the stands’ rail.

He was soon in front and hit the line hard to win by a length-and-a-quarter from the running-on Eldrickjones (66/1).

Other notable Coventry Stakes winners include Ridgemont’s resident sire, and five time G1 winner Canford Cliffs, who won the 2009 Coventry Stakes in brilliant fashion!
Berkshire Shadow is out of the Oasis Dream mare Angel Vision, a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winning champion Islington.
The latter, a full-sister to G1 winner Greek Dance, is out of the Darshaan sired G1 Yorkshire Oaks winner Hellenic, whose fourth dam Country House also ranks as the fifth dam of Potala Palace.
The latter made headlines recently when his classy daughter Singforafa captured the G1 South African Fillies Sprint at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.
