Katak Impressive Cape Winter Series Hero!

Katak remained unbeaten after five career starts with another scintillating win at Kenilworth on Sunday and in doing so landed the Grade 3 Pocket Power Stakes over 2400m to complete the Cape Winter Series Triple Crown under Bernard Fayd’herbe.

With this, three-year-old Katak proved his talent over a mile, 1800m and the stayers’ trip, and brought back fond memories for part-owner Marsh Shirtliff and racing fans alike, as Pocket Power himself won the Cape Winter Series in the same silks, and was also ridden by Bernard Fayd’herbe.

South Africa’s leading heavyweight jock placed Katak close to the pace in fourth and as they turned for home, he let out some rein. They hit the front and in a matter of strides powered away of the opposition. At the 200m mark the race was over. “He is still a big baby,” said trainer Piet Steyn after the race. “He still has so much improvement to come.”

Fayd’Herbe commented “He is super-impressive to ride. At the top of the straight I just gave him a bit of a click and he accelerated immediately. Some three-year-olds have a problem when racing over longer distances but he had no issues handling the 2400m. Piet has done a great job with him. He’s a horse with really good manners, and for me, it was a pleasure to get on a good horse again.”

The Sun Met and Vodacom Durban July will be natural targets for Katak next, as they were with Pocket Power, although big monetary offers from overseas will probably come in and may be hard to turn down.

Katak, a Ridgemont Highlands-bred by Potala Palace, has won five from five and has earned R309,375, excluding the series bonus. He was offered for sale at the CTS April 2018 Yearling Sale, where Steyn acquired him privately from Graeme Koster’s Rosedene Stud and afterwards sold shares to Marsh Shirtliff and Bryn Ressell.
