Ridgemont Highlands’ five-time G1-winning stallion Canford Cliffs was truly an exceptional racehorse, the facts simply tell the story.

A brilliant group winner at Royal Ascot three years running, the Hannon trained star is officially rated one of the best milers to grace the turf this century.

According to respected publication Timeform, Canford Cliffs, rated 133 by Timeform, is the joint fifth top rated miler to race during the 21st century.

His rating places Canford Cliffs alongside such outstanding performers as Excelebration (triple G1 winner), George Washington (2000 Guineas, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, National Stakes, Phoenix Stakes), Goldikova (14-time G1 winner, won the Breeders’ Cup Mile three times), Raven’s Pass (Breeders’ Cup Classic, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes) and Rock Of Gibraltar. The latter was Horse Of The Year in 2002 following a campaign which saw “The Rock” win five G1 races in a row (he ultimately had a winning streak of seven straight G1 races).

As the Champion 3YO Male Miler ( UK and Ireland) of his generation and also the Champion Older UK Miler in 2011, Canford Cliffs is also rated officially superior to the recently retired Palace Pier, with that five time G1 winner given a rating of 132 by Timeform.

While his winning run of five consecutive G1 victories came to an end in the 2011 Goodwood Stakes, the fact he was beaten by Frankel, the world’s highest rated miler this century with an astonishing Timeform of 147, once again highlights the sheer talent of Canford Cliffs possessed throughout his career, that saw him never outside of the top three in all his 11 starts.

A brilliant son of Kingman, Palace Pier retires to stud having won nine of 11 races, with his notable career victories including the 2020 G1 St James’s Palace Stakes, 2020 G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, 2021 G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes, 2021 G1 Queen Anne Stakes and 2021 Prix Jacques le Marois.

Canford Cliffs, whose first South African bred runners race this season, represents a wonderful opportunity for breeders to use one of the finest thoroughbreds of our generation!

While we are yet to see his South African runners as yet, his global 62% winners to runners ratio highlights his ability, and when compared with those active sires in the top ten with runners in South Africa, such as Vercingetorix at 65%, Querari 64%, Gimmethegreenlight at 63% and Master Of My Fate 58%, Canford Cliffs figures are extremely comparative.

The Irish classic winning superstar has two members of his first local crop on offer at the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale as Lot 58 and Lot 98.
